Magic Micro-moment: Servant Leadership

“How can I help?”

I’ve been watching this show on Netflix called New Amsterdam about a medical director in a hospital who wants to shake up the system and provide a better working environment for staff and better medical care to patients. “How can I help?” is the first thing he says to everyone he meets and then genuinely listens and supports. This struck me as a wonderful disposition for all leaders as it values the expertise of the individual in front of you, empowers the person with an issue to find their own solutions that work for them, and offers connection and support. Often when someone shares a problem with us, we start solutionizing. We mean well but the effect is often the opposite of the above. When we have a problem we often don’t want solutions, we want to be heard, seen, understood and reminded what we are capable of! “How can I help?” is a wonderful way to show trust in the person as well as commitment to helping someone else clear their blockers so that they can shine. “How can I help?” Is the essence of the kind of leadership I aspire to!
