“Let’s do it together!”
In a workshop designed to improve engagement within a team, we were looking at how connections between team members effect the culture of their working environment. As part of the dream stage of appreciative inquiry, I asked the team to imagine that they walked into an office with a highly engaged team at work and to document what they would see (What activities are people engaged in?), hear (What kinds of talk is happening? Specific words and phrases.), and feel (How does it feel to be in this environment?).
There were so many powerful ideas shared but the one that stuck with me and the team was something they’d hear in an engaged environment- “Let’s do it together.” This phrase captured the essence of the collaboration that the team wanted more of. Sometimes a small shift in language can make a huge impact; This one phrase takes moments of isolation, frustration, and possible moments of embarrassment about not being sure how to do a task and transforms them into powerful moments of connection, vulnerability and generosity, shared learning, and collaboration.
Where can you find opportunities for an attitude of “Let’s do it together?”
